John Krasinski Talks About "A Quiet Place" Scene that Made Him Cry

John Krasinski said that in casting his onscreen daughter for A Quiet Place, he wanted the role to be as authentic as possible.

Deaf actress Millicent Simmonds landed the gig. The young star can hear very low levels of sound from extremely loud sources — like from an explosion — but not softer pitches like someone’s voice, Krasinski learned from her mother, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“She comes from a family where everyone else can hear, so I said, ‘what does that feel like?’” Krasinski said Wednesday during a Q&A at the Silver Screen Theatre in Los Angeles.

In learning about her life experiences, Krasinski was able to depict what it’s like to be her in his film, an experience that made her mother emotional.

“And watching her mom sort of cry in that moment,” Krasinski recalled, “she said, ‘I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be my daughter and you finally delivered it for me.’”

“And I cried hard,” he said.
