Grove, Koufax, Ryan, Johnson…Scherzer.
On Tuesday night, Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer became only the fifth pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball to throw multiple ‘immaculate innings’ in his career, Yahoo Sports reports.
Scherzer, who tossed his first immaculate inning last May against the Philadelphia Phillies, struck out Tampa Bay Rays batters Johnny Field, Christian Arroyo and Daniel Robertson on nine pitches in the top of the sixth inning.
By striking out the side on nine pitches twice in his career, Scherzer joins an elite group that counts Baseball Hall of Famers Lefty Grove, Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson as members.
“I honestly didn’t know it happened,” Scherzer said after Washington’s 4-2 win. “Then I walked off the field and I was like, wait a second, I think that was it. So yeah, that’s cool.”
On the night, Scherzer struck out 13 while walking none and improved his record to 10-1.
