James Mangold will write and direct a new, Star Wars stand-alone film about Boba Fett, the feared bounty hunter and fan-favorite character, The Hollywood Reporter reported. This reveal comes as Disney and Disney-owned Lucasfilm prepare for the launch of the latest Star Wars standalone film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. That movie opens Friday and tells the tale of Han Solo’s earlier history as a roguish smuggler.
Lucasfilm is developing other character profile movies including one on Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will be directed by Stephen Daldry if negotiations go through.
Boba Fett was introduced in 1980’s Empire Strikes Back and then appeared again in Return of the Jedi as the mercenary who brings Han Solo to the dreaded crime lord Jabba the Hutt. Fett’s character first appears as a small boy in Episode II: Attack of the Clones, who was a clone of the bounty hunter Jango Fett, who raised Boba as his own son. After Jango was decapitated by the Jedi Master Mace Windu during a fight at the end of Episode II, Boba swears his revenge on his father’s killer.
