Bulgarian mountaineer Boyan Petrov was last seen nearly a week ago near Camp 3 on the mountain of Shishapangma. The 45-year-old climber had left his teammates to try make a solo attempt on the summit. According to Outside Online, he was climbing without supplemental oxygen and had no radio. His wife, Radoslava Nenova, posted on Facebook that Petrov has been missing for days and that the other members climbing with him left Camp 3 and returned to base camp because conditions were deteriorating. But Petrov decided to remain at the camp and summit alone, as he had done before on many climbs.
On May 5, a search team went to Camp 3 and found Petrov’s tent with the flaps open and his sleeping bag filled with snow, which suggests he had not been there for days.
Petrov is considered the most successful Bulgarian high-altitude alpinist climbing today. He has an impressive mountaineering history, including summits of 10 of the 14 8,000-meter mountains, all without supplemental oxygen. He is a two-time cancer survivor and a diabetic, writes Outside Online. Nenova currently believes that Petrov made it to another camp where there was food and oxygen. Another search party was dispatched on Monday, May 7, after the Chinese Mountaineering Association officially declared Petrov missing.
