Holy Matrimony! The Caped Crusader Is Tying the Knot with Catwoman

Breaking new ground, DC Comics writer Tom King will have 'Batman' marry this summer.

Though we don’t know what will happen in the life of the Hollywood’s Batman, the comic book version of Bruce Wayne will be taking a major step in his life this summer: Gettming married to Selina Kyle, better known as Catwoman. The wedding storyline is the work of Tom King, a writer who once served as a CIA officer in Iraq. For the past two years, GQ writes, King has been working on a Batman story arc unlike any other, and it has all been building to this summer’s Batman #50. But just like any real-world wedding, the first thing to take care of is the invitations.

King created a special sampler comic DC Nation #0 as a kick-off. It featured an eight-page story by King with art by Clay Mann and Jordie Bellaire. In it, the Joker has learned about the upcoming nuptials and wonders where his invitation is. GQ spoke to King about his work, and about how giving Batman a happy ending could be the worst thing you could do for him.

“I was just looking for something new to do with Batman, and the thing that would really f-ck him up is not making him sadder…but what would happen if we made him happy?” King told GQ. “He has that power to turn grief and pain and turn it into hope. That’s his whole power. He’s like a machine that works that way—so what happens when you reverse that, feed the machine what it puts out? Give him hope, give him happiness. Does the machine still function?”
