From Tim Couch to Brady Quinn to Johnny Manziel, the Cleveland Browns have taken a bunch of quarterbacks in the first round of the NFL Draft, but have had trouble picking the right one.
To help remedy that situation this year, Cleveland might be unorthodox and select two of ‘em.
Currently holding picks No. 1 and 4, the Browns are almost guaranteed to select a quarterback with their first pick. While it’s unlikely they’d pick another one at No. 4, they could. Or, in a more likely scenario, they could trade out of that spot and take a signal-caller with one of the multiple picks they receive in return.
A move like that, while rare, isn’t unprecedented as the Washington Redskins did something like it when they took Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins in the first and fourth rounds of the ‘12 draft.
If the Browns do decide they want to take two quarterbacks, they’d be wise to follow Washington’s blueprint as picking QBs at No. 1 and No. 4 would end up being a mess, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.
“Even if it would (in theory) give Cleveland two top-end candidates to solve a decades-long problem, it invites too much immediate disaster,” Robinson writes. “Played out in reality, it would fall apart as soon as the second quarterback came off the board at the No. 4 overall pick — at which point the agents of both players would contact the Browns to let them know someone needed to be traded immediately.”
