John Oliver Announces His Candidacy for Italian Prime Minister

“Incredibly, I am far from your worst option.”

Comedian John Oliver took a break from U.S. politics on Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight” to talk about the upcoming election for prime minister in Italy — and announce his candidacy in the race.

“Italy is in turmoil and is dabbling with fascism and that should worry everyone,” Oliver told viewers. “The last time they did that, they wound up with Mussolini. The, to put it nicely, Turner to Hitler’s Hooch.”

After consulting with a half-dozen Italian legal experts, Oliver found that there’s no citizenship requirement if the nation’s ruling coalition chooses a person to run — and made a strong case for why it should be him.
